2 LIDO HISTORY – ROOTS

After the First Word War, stability came to the Holy Land with the establishment of the British Mandate. Sensing better times, Zvi Gross bought a car to advance his transportation business. In time he became known as a reliable driver and guide for the growing number of pilgrims visiting the Sea of Galilee.

Eitan Gross was born in 1927. When he was 20 he gave a lift on his motorcycle to a skinny, shy 14 year-old girl called Esther, who lived in a village near Mitzpe. The road was so bumpy that she fell off the back and he arrived at her home not realizing that she was no longer behind him. He returned to find her sitting on a rock in tears. Esther Pinchas came from the same pioneering family background as Eitan and a few years later they married. Eitan began to devote himself to his growing tourist and pilgrim business, spending many hours away from home as a bus driver and guide.

Esther Gross loved to fish and swim in Lake Galilee while Eitan was on the road. A favorite spot was near the neglected Lido Beach which had been a popular officer's club during the British Mandate.

After some years, when Eitan was already more established, he decided to buy the overgrown and run-down Lido site: This would be a perfect recreation spot for Esther’s fishing, for himself and their two growing children.

In 1960 Eitan Gross bought Lido Beach.....
