Lido History

The Mount of Beautitudes Church
The Mount of Beatitudes Church was built by Italian architect A. Barluzzi who also designed some of the most magnificent churches in the Holy Land. The Church, on a rise overlooking Galilee towards the south east, commemorates the Jesus' Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-43)

All around the 'Sea' of Galilee are major historical and Biblical sites. Most of Jesus' ministry was spent here and the area abounds with churches of all denominations marking these events. Historically, there are also many sites commemorating battles, pioneering kibbutz settlements, memorials and all manner of attractions.

Below are a few of the most popular pilgrim sites visited on Lido's pilgrim's cruises.

 St Peters Church Capernaum
The Church of the Primacy of Peter, near Capernaum marks the place where Jesus chose Peter as the leader of his disciples. (John:21) With its black basalt volcanic stones, the church is typical of buildings in this region.
At Capernaum are the ruins of a magnificent Synagogue dating from the period of Hadrian in the 2nd Century. Jesus made this spot his center and performed many miracles here. (Mark 4: and 1:21, Matthew 4:12-13 & 8: & 9: etc.)
Tabcha: Mosaic of the Fish & Loaves The Greek Orthodox Church
At Tabcha, there is an ancient Byzantine mosaic showing a basket of loaves with a fish on each side. This commemorates the Miracle of the Fish & Loaves. (Matthew 14:13-23, Mark 6:35-44, John 6:1-13)
The Greek Orthodox Church at Capernaum lies east of the main archaeological excavations. The bright flamingo domes, white walls and squat turrets make it one of the most charming shrines on the lake.
